Agility, DEI and Cohesion: What Do They Have in Common?

Many organizations are focused on the following key areas:

  1. Agility: Closing the innovation gap
  2. Diversity, equity, inclusion
  3. Cohesion: Teamwork, collaboration, and alignment

To succeed, organizations need to focus on how leadership and the workforce thinks, and the beliefs and mindsets they have, in order to change behaviors. Behavior starts with thoughts, beliefs, and emotions.

According to research on agility published by McKinsey, “More than any other factor, the key to a successful agile transformation is for leaders, particularly senior leaders, to develop substantially new mindsets and capabilities.”

While diversity has been a focus of many organizations, as a result of the civil unrest and protests, many businesses are re-evaluating their diversity, equity and inclusion programs. A study conducted by McKinsey in 2015, provides evidence that diverse workforces strongly correlates to improved business performance.

Finally, with many companies allowing their staff to work remotely, alignment, cohesion, and teamwork is essential for peak performance.

To accomplish the goals of these 3 essential business practices agility, DEI, and teamwork/cohesion, businesses now need to focus on changing mindsets and beliefs. Many businesses focus on DEI as an initiative. Agility seems to focus on process change and not true innovation. There is fear of making mistakes so people won’t innovate. Teamwork gets relegated to defining roles and responsibilities.

If businesses want to change in all these areas, the focus must be on mindset and beliefs. If mindsets and beliefs don’t change, behavior won’t change. At an organizational level, paradigm shifts need to occur. This round-table discussion provides valuable insights on how to address and change mindset and beliefs.
