Brian McKinney

Brian McKinney has 20 years of experience in the healthcare analytics, underwriting and employee benefits.  He has spent the last 12 years working at the HCA Healthcare in Nashville, Tennessee.

Brian oversees plan strategy, analytics and accounting on $4B in employee plan expense.  As AVP of Finance & Analytics for HCA’s Employee Benefits COE, he leverages his previous underwriting experience with a global health insurance and service company to design plans that optimize domestic facility utilization and maximize financial performance.  Through his work on innovative plan designs and technology-driven steerage solutions, HCA has been able to retain over 81% of employee plan facility spend in its own affiliated network.

Throughout Brian’s tenure at HCA Healthcare, his thought leadership has refocused their benefits strategy to address the needs of an ever-changing workforce to better attract and retain talent, while addressing the complex compliance requirements associated with being a national employer.  His initial efforts focused on the creation of a best in class-outsourced arrangement for leave administration and ensuring all employees have adequate pay replacement while on disability by eliminating extended illness banks and implementing a more equitable short-term disability program that includes case management and more defined processes.  Most recently, Brian helped implement and design one of the first paid family leave programs in the healthcare industry and is currently working to redesign the company’s paid time off program to become a better attraction tool through innovative solutions.

Brian was recognized by IBM with a 2014 Health Advantage Award for the creation of the HCA Services Navigator.  This web-based tool leverages hospital and physician billing and procedure code data to provide an accurate inventory of hospital services in HCA’s affiliated network, which allows care under the employee medical plan to be directed to the most appropriate location.

He received his bachelor’s degree in Finance from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.
