Kris Shepard is Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Atrium Health in Charlotte, North Carolina. Atrium Health is one of the largest integrated not-for-profit healthcare systems in the nation, with more than 900 care locations in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Prior to his current role, Kris served as Vice President – Physician Network Development and Central Contracting with the Atrium Health Medical Group, where he led a compensation redesign effort involving over 1,400 physicians. Kris has also served Atrium Health as leader of the transaction team within the Office of General Counsel, and prior to joining Atrium Health was an associate at the law firm Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A., in Charlotte.
Kris’s practice focuses on corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and other affiliations, and healthcare regulatory issues, including physician compensation arrangements.
He received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, a Ph.D. in history from Emory University, and B.A. in history and education from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of Rationing Justice, a study of legal aid lawyers during and after the Civil Rights Movement in the American South, and he co-edited a collection of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speeches called A Call to Conscience while working at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project at Emory and Stanford University.
