Laura is the Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel for Mass General Brigham (MGB), reporting to the President and CEO. Mass General Brigham (formerly known as Partners HealthCare) is a health system based in Boston Massachusetts founded in 1994 by Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), two of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. Mass General Brigham is comprised of 16 member institutions that encompass a range of health care organizations including BWH, MGH, specialty hospitals, community hospitals, a rehabilitation network , a health insurance plan, a physician network, a teaching organization and many locations for urgent and community care. Mass General Brigham is the largest employer in Massachusetts with approximately 80,000 employees.
Laura’s responsibilities include providing legal and strategic counsel throughout Mass General Brigham, including to its Board of Directors. Laura manages a team of lawyers, paralegals and support staff with expertise in all areas of health care law including patient care issues, labor and employment, corporate transactions, network development, regulatory compliance, litigation, government investigations, research compliance, and commercialization of technology. In addition, she oversees the Office for Interaction with Industry, a group that implements and oversees all policies relating to interactions with industry and outside activities, including oversight and integration of all conflict of interest disclosure processes.
Laura is also responsible for Government Affairs (GA) at Mass General Brigham. The GA team manages government relations at the local, state, and federal level. This work includes partnering with internal and external lobbyists and trade associations to impact laws, regulations and public policy affecting MGB.
Prior to joining MGB in 2017, Laura was Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer of Northwell, Inc., a major not-for-profit integrated health care delivery system serving the greater New York area. Northwell is comprised of 18 hospitals, three long-term care facilities, three certified home health agencies, five trauma centers, a hospice network, over 450 ambulatory and physician practice locations, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Northwell is the largest employer in New York State. Laura was responsible for legal services for the entire organization. During the four years Laura spent at Northwell, she restructured its corporate governance.
Before representing health systems, Laura spent many years representing healthcare payors. She was an attorney at Harvard Community Health Plan, Deputy General Counsel at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and General Counsel at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC). At HPHC Laura was responsible for the provision of legal services to the organization. She also managed Government Affairs, Internal Audit, Real Estate and Facilities and programs for the senior market including Medicare Advantage. Laura was the Chair of the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation board.
Laura has also served on the boards of UNICEF, the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts Women’s Bar Foundation and the Elliot School in Jamaica Plain. She was recently elected to the Board of Trustees at McLean Hospital. Laura lives in Somerville, MA with her husband, Bob Peabody, and has two adult children and a daughter-in-law who live close by.
