Michael McMillan is the Senior Vice President for Payer Contracting and Payer Relations for Ascension. In this highly strategic role, he oversees the full scope of the health system’s relationship with health plans and the implementation of managed care strategy.
McMillan leads teams responsible for managed care contract negotiation, hospital and physician network management, fee for service pricing, rate development, and value-based payment initiatives, including population health and innovative payment models.
Prior to joining Ascension, Mr. McMillan led the managed care division for the Cleveland Clinic. In that role, he had enterprise level accountability for managing the overall relationship with health plans and employers. His responsibilities included pricing, contract negotiations, network management and direct sales. He also developed payment innovation and growth strategies with payers and employers, such as Cleveland Clinic’s groundbreaking direct to employer agreements, with Lowes, Wal-Mart, Boeing and many others. He also played a leadership role in implementing the Cleveland Clinic’s approach to value based care, including developing one of the nation’s largest clinically integrated networks and accountable care organizations.
McMillan also held key leadership roles at Valence Health, the population health management company and Cancer Treatment Centers of America where he oversaw payer relations, value-based initiatives and employer sales.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration degrees from Columbia University in the City of New York.
