Michael J. Regier is General Counsel and Secretary for Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Regier joined Vanderbilt University in February 2016, and assumed the role of General Counsel for the Medical Center on April 30, 2016, when the Medical Center was spun off from the University. He leads a team of 65 staff members and is responsible for all legal and regulatory matters, risk management, insurance programs and compliance program for VUMC, which has more approximately $6.0 billion in annual net patient service revenue and approximately 30,000 employees (including approximately 3,000 employed physicians).
Before joining VUMC, he had served as general counsel for three different large health care organizations since 1995 (Seton Healthcare Family, Austin, TX; VHA Inc. (now Vizient), Irving, TX; and Atlantic Health System, Morristown, NJ). Before beginning in-house practice, he had been in private law practice in Chicago, Illinois for 10 years.
He received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with highest distinction from the University of Kansas, and his Juris Doctor degree from The University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a Dillard Fellow.
He has served on the adjunct faculty of the University of Texas Law School, is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the Tennessee Bar Association Health Law Section, and the American Bar Association Health Law Section, and has been a frequent speaker on both national and regional programs on health care law.
