In September 2020, Stacy Bratcher was named Vice President and General Counsel of Cottage Health, the largest healthcare provider in California’s Central Coast region. In this new role, she advises on all legal issues affecting the organization, and also leads the legal, audit and compliance functions of the organization.
With a medical staff of more than 700 physicians, Cottage Health offers many subspecialties found only at university medical centers, including the Cottage Children’s Medical Center, Level 1 Trauma Center, Neuroscience Institute, Heart & Vascular Center, and an Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital. Cottage Health also offers Urgent Care Centers throughout the region, as well as 24-hour access to providers via its new telehealth platform, Cottage Virtual Care.
Prior to joining Cottage Health, Ms. Bratcher spent fifteen years at the University of Southern California in various leadership positions, most recently as Vice President and Managing General Counsel overseeing all legal matters impacting the university and Keck Medicine of USC. In that role, Ms. Bratcher also supervised the Office of Risk Management, which manages the university’s risk financing and insurance portfolio and conducted proactive risk mitigation.
Ms. Bratcher began her career as an associate for the healthcare law firm Hooper, Lundy & Bookman in Los Angeles, where she practiced in the firm’s regulatory and litigation departments handling fraud and abuse defense, Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement cases, and managed care litigation for a variety of healthcare providers.
Actively involved in community activities, she is currently serving as a trustee of the California Self Insured Security Fund, and she was previously a Commissioner on the Los Angeles County Hospital Commission since 2003, serving as its chair from 2014 to 2018.
Ms. Bratcher received her J.D., cum laude, with a certification in health law from St. Louis University School of Law, and her B.A. in English from Truman State University. She is also an occasional speaker on legal topics impacting health care providers, and presented at the Healthcare Law and Compliance Institute in 2020.
