IP Leaders Connect Virtually to Share Best Practices for Navigating the Evolving IP Landscape
By Amy Hallman on August 19, 2021
The effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic have spared none, and like so many other organizational leaders, IP Leaders have had to adapt to navigate the developing needs of the evolving economic landscape.
Chief IP Counsel from organizations in a variety of industries across the U.S. have all faced significant changes in the last 18 months and have worked to find new and innovative ways to strategically lead their IP teams through varying challenges.
While some IP leading industries have been negatively affected by the economic downturn with the associated reduction in budgets for R&D and expensive patent applications, others are exploring opportunities in response to COVID-19, creating a boom particularly in the life sciences and technology fields that are focussed on protective equipment, testing, treatments, and drug discovery. The software industry has also been flourishing, swiftly introducing products to facilitate virtual interactions and remote work.
The 2021 Virtual IP Law & Management Institute which took place August 11th – 12th, 2021, on the Remo events platform, offered IP Leaders the opportunity to connect virtually with peers from other leading organizations across the United States to share best practices and insights, and to arm one another with the tools and actionable insights necessary to rise to today’s IP challenges. The two-day event featured inspiring keynotes, dynamic panel discussions, interactive think tank and roundtable sessions, led by IP-leading organizations such as IBM, Uber, 3M, Mitsubishi, Whirlpool, and Thermo Fisher Scientific to name a few.
Session highlights included discussions on:
- Blockchain and innovative uses for IP protection
- The intersection of AI and IP, and navigating those challenges and opportunities
- Recent anti-counterfeiting and brand protection efforts for masks and PPE at 3M
- Strategies for building, managing, and leading a successful IP team in a remote / hybrid workplace
The sessions were interspersed with several opportunities to network and interact through team challenges and open table talk, providing attendees with additional ways to connect meaningfully.
The goal of the 2021 Virtual IP Law & Management Institute was to provide a safe environment for IP Leaders to gather, network and to share ideas and strategies to lead through this evolving IP landscape. We appreciate this feedback from attending IP Leaders, who shared the following comments:
“Excellent organization, vibrant and elegant online ambience, outstanding sessions, brilliant speakers, thought-provoking deliberations, rewarding takeaways.”
“Really enjoyed it. Glad I made the time.”
“Truly enjoyed attending the event, and the IPLMI staff was amazing before and during the event.”
“It was a really great event and was very clearly thought out. In 1.5+ years of virtual meetings, this was one of the more engaging conferences I’ve been a part of. Great job!”
We are immensely grateful for the time, efforts, and enthusiasm of the 2021 Virtual IP Law & Management Institute Advisory Committee, Speaker Faculty, Service Providers and Attendees. We recognize the many challenges each of you have faced during these unprecedented times but know that with every challenge comes opportunity for growth. We hope that you continue to search out and seize those many opportunities and we look forward to hosting you again very soon!
